OFFICER IN CHARGE OF A NAVIGATIONAL WATCH

About Course:

The Program was designed in accordance with international and national marine standards to train, develop and provide the learner with the required knowledge and skills for acting as officer in charge of a navigational watch at operational level.

Course Objectives:

The program objective is to cover the required functions for an officer in charge of a navigational watch at operational level. At the end of the course and after passing the required COC assessment the officer will have all the required knowledge and skills for taking full responsibility for:

* Navigation at the Operational Level.

* Cargo Handling and Stowage at the Operational Level

* Controlling the Operation of the Ship and Care for the Persons on Board at the Operational Level

Course Information:

The program objective is to cover the required functions for an officer in charge of a navigational watch at

operational level. At the end of the course and after passing the required COC assessment the officer will have all the

required knowledge and skills for taking full responsibility for:

• Carry out safely watchkeeping duties at sea and in port.

• Monitor cargo operation (loading, stowage, securing, unloading and cargo care during voyage).

• Knowledge to support control operation of ship and care for persons on board at sea and in port.

Course Assessment Method:

• The candidate is required to prove competency through written, practical, and oral assessments.

• Assessment is conducted either at SMA facility under the supervision of the administration or at a place determined

by the administration

Delivery Method:

blend between Lecture Based, Guided Instruction, Discussions, Active Learning and Simulations to achieve the program objectives.

Program Entry requirements:( FMA Guidelines for OONW)

• Be at least 18 years old.

• Medically fit and have good eyesight according to medical report issued from FMA approved medical practitioner.

• Be of good character and a fit and proper person, as per a “Good conduct certificate” issued by concerned party.

• Minimum EmSAT-English score of 1100 or equivalent.

• Meet the combined training and sea service requirements for one of the following option:

A) In case of completing SMA Basic Studies:

• Complete basic studies at SMA and

• Complete 18 months of approved sea service as per an approved training record book verified by the Master of the ship and stamped with ship’s stamp.

B) In case of completing Basic Studies at approved MOEI – FMA institution:

 

 Eligibility Requirement:

• To qualify for transfer to SMA, students must have completed their basic studies from a maritime institution accredited by the MOEI-FMA.

• Applicants must submit their official transcripts, course descriptions, and Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) to the SMA registrar for evaluation.

 

Equivalency Assessment:

• The registrar will conduct an assessment of transfer credits by aligning the completed courses with SMA's basic studies curriculum.

• Courses with a grade below C will not be considered for equivalency.

 

Registration Requirements:

• Upon completion of the equivalency assessment, students will be informed of transferable credits and any additional required courses needed to meet SMA's basic studies curriculum.

• Students must register for the required courses as advised by the registrar.

   

Enrollment in OICNW/OICEW Program:

• Once the basic studies requirements are fulfilled, students are eligible to enroll in SMA's OICNW/OICEW program.

• Admission to the OICNW/OICEW program is contingent upon meeting all prerequisites and any additional requirements specified by SMA according to MOEI-FMA.

C) In case of sea service without basic studies:

• Pass an oral comprehensive assessment by 2 SMA maritime trainers approved by MOEI – FMA.

• Completing 36 months of approved sea service, which must include at least 12 months’ onboard merchant ships of 500 GRT or more.

• Have the required ancillary certificates before applying for MoEI FMA CoC Exam.

• Medically fit and have good eyesight according to medical report issued from FMA approved medical practitioner.
