Dr. Donald Paterson works as an Assistant Professor within the Marine Engineering Technology Department of Sharjah Maritime Academy. He previously held the position of Research Associate at the University of Strathclyde, where he engaged in research primarily relating to passenger vessel safety and risk-based design. During this time, he has worked on several large-scale projects, including the EU funded FLARE project, and the eSAFE project, funded by the Cruise Ship Safety Forum. He has also conducted research funded by the Scottish government looking into novel solutions to the problem of ship flooding, which led to the development of a patented design solution of which he is a co-inventor. In addition, he was a founding member of a university spin-out company, Maritime Safety Innovations Ltd., where he worked as a Naval Architect and conducted a wide range of projects for some the world’s largest ship builders and operators. Furthermore, he has worked as a short-term consultant for the World Bank Group, where he was involved in conducting an FSA on domestic passenger vessel safety.

Dr Paterson holds a PhD in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering which he received from the University of Strathclyde. He has published a number of indexed journal articles relating to ship safety, risk-based design, flooding simulations and ship stability. Furthermore, he has written a wide range of conference papers and presented at international conferences around the world.
