Serdar Yildiz is an Associate Head of Academic Research at the Maritime Transport Department of the Sharjah Maritime Academy. His prior experience includes a tenure as a Research Associate at the World Maritime University (WMU), an institution under the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a United Nations specialized agency. At WMU, Dr. Yildiz specialized in maritime safety, working as a data analyst on projects such as the Impact Assessment Support Study for DG MOVE, the Formal Safety Assessment for Enhancing Safety of Domestic Passenger Ships for the IMO and the WBG, Scoping exercise of the safety of domestic ferry industries in seven countries for LRF and Interferry, A pilot study of passenger vessel casualties for the IMO, and the Study to Detect Potential Covid-19 Related Safety Issues and Emerging Risks Contributing to Marine Casualties and Incidents for EMSA.

 

Dr Yildiz received his PhD from the Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering Department, Karadeniz Technical University of Turkey, with a high honorary degree. His PhD thesis is about “Maritime Risk Evaluation and Safety Optimization in Narrow Straits: A Case Study in Istanbul Strait and the English Channel”, based on an international collaborative project funded by the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU). Dr Yildiz worked as a Research Assistant at Karadeniz Technical University between 2015-2021. In addition, he taught undergraduate level vocational courses in the Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering Department for six years. He is also an oceangoing watchkeeping officer and has sea experience, working for two years in international waters on board container ships.

 

Dr Yildiz has a decade of experience in academia conducting research, including qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis in the maritime field, in particular safety, maritime accidents, risk, reliability, human and organizational factors. His research papers have been presented at international scientific conferences and published in globally indexed scientific journals in the maritime field.
