About Course:

This course covers the training recommendations in annex 3 to the IMO Assembly resolution A. 703 (17) - Recommendation on Training of Radio Operators related to the General Operator’s Certificate (GOC).

Course Objectives:

At the end of the course, trainee should be able to:

• Use the Radar as an aid to navigation to avoid collision and position determination.

• Adjust the radar picture to the maximum optimization.

• Correctly interpret the radar picture

• Perform manual plotting.

• Determine the ship’s position.

• Use the ARPA system and AIS overlay.

• Avoid collision.

Course Information:

• The course addresses the operation of radar and ARPA through explaining the fundamental principles, limitations, factors affecting radar performance, factors that causes miss interpretation of the radar picture. In addition, the course explains and demonstrates the plotting processes that identify the targets data and the use of ARPA and AIS target data to avoid collision and ensure safe navigation. Moreover, the course includes simulator sessions to enable the trainee to practice on the use of radar with all involved aspects.

Course Assessment Method:

• Written exam.

• Practical exam.

The course training will be a blend of:

• Classroom lectures.

• Simulator Training.

Prerequisites:

This course is principally intended for candidates for certification as officers in charge of a navigational watch. Prior to entering the course, trainees should have completed a minimum period of six months at sea and preferably have gained some experience of watchkeeping
